Our guidelines

The gardens operate in an allotment style and anyone is welcome to join the garden, particularly those on low income and/or without a garden at home. Contact the garden coordinator to join the wait list. Available plots will be offered to people on the waitlist – ‘first in, first served’.

  • We are a small group of keen gardeners and all need to help maintain the communal areas of the garden.
  • We keep individual plots in a reasonable state of cultivation at all times. If you are away or sick for a long period, please arrange someone else to look after your plot. As there are other people in the community who would like a plot, if your plot is unattended for several months, you will be expected to tidy up or leave your plot.
  • Allow some time to weed and/or tidy a communal area or path when you tend your own plot.
  • It is appreciated if we all help out with other occasional tasks, such as dump runs.

Communal areas

The communal areas with flowers and two feijoa trees, a lemon tree and a lemon verbena are for everyone to enjoy. Feel free to plant more flowers. Planting more trees must be discussed first as space is limited and don’t want to shade out the sun.

  • We respect each others’ gardens. We have a ‘keep it green/organic’ policy –  avoid the use of toxic sprays etc. Theft from another’s garden is of course not tolerated.
  • We dispose of waste at the appropriate sites in the garden. Green waste goes under the trees by the gate in one of the compost bins. Non-green waste goes in the rubbish bin to the left of the shed. Persistent weeds such as kooch and oxalis go in the bins in the area to the right of the composting bins by the gate (not in the compost as they will still be alive when the compost is spread back on your garden!)
  • Water is a precious resource and is not wasted. Always be present when using the hose and turn it off when you are finished.
  • We keep our garden & tools secure.
  • The shed is for shared and individual tools. Store your tools in a named box/bucket. Please put things back and bolt the shed door when finished.
  • Make sure you secure and lock the garden gate when you leave.

Fees

  • We contribute an annual fee which may vary from year to year as needed. Payment each fall confirms your interest for the season.
  • If necessary, we may seek other funding/sponsorship.
